Today we had a 'down day' in Twizel where we didn't have any specific, pre-arranged plans. When we arrived in Twizel we were met with the most beautiful, crystal-clear blue waters. I'm not sure that the camera on my phone can do justice to just how spectacular the water in this region is. As such, we made plans to go for a long bushwalk today into the hills where we could see the canal the runs beside the small town we had settled in. The forecast of 11 degrees meant we wouldn't be swimming in the water, nor playing along its shores today.
After Saje spoke yesterday about how our bushwalk had been without adventure. We didn't bother to read the signs, we just set off on one trail for about 2 km. We could see the trail we wanted to be on, but the trail we were on was veering off in the opposite direction.
We drove 500m down the road and checked the proper trail map. This route looked more promising.
We headed along a level dirt path for about 1 km, then came upon a beautiful man-made forest. It reminded us very much of the forests near Ottawa.
From further up the hill you can certainly make out the intentional nature of the planned forest. The many cattle that we shared the Bushwalk with were quite interested in our trek towards the summit. The local farmer has an agreement with the government to share the land, so we were met with many gates to open and close along the way. Here is Big C striking a pose from the top where we had lunch...
And then photo bombing my selfie before we descended back down. All in all we covered about 13km over land.
We should all sleep well before our road trip to Te Anau tomorrow morning.
