Once a week, at least, Monkey sleeps over at Grandma and Grandpa's house. He loves his sleepovers and usually the only good bye that we get once Grandma shows up in the bobling of the flair on the top of his head as he is walking off the front porch to get in to her jeep.
When you ask Monkey why he likes to sleep over there so much, he'll tell you that it is because he gets to watch TV all day and all night. Grandma denies that this is true and has even sent me photographic evidence of the things that go on during sleepovers to prove her point. Whaddaya think?
We have revived our old blog to share our travels with our family, friends and our future selves. We've changed our names around a little to keep our privacy. We hope you enjoy your visit!

Earth Hour 2008 - What will you be doing?
If you haven't already heard, tomorrow between 8 pm and 9pm the entire planet (well, to be honest those of us with electricity) will be observing the first Earth hour. This is a green initiative to turn the lights off, and all electrical appliances, for one hour. This conservation initiative is one that has the potential to impact the planet based solely on the number of those who participate. Here's the link for more info: http://www.earthhour2008.com/.
Please take a moment to think about and then please act on it. Let us know what you did for one hour of one day to make a difference.
See you in the darkness!

DPoD March 28 - Barbers or Doctors?
E-man was over for a visit this afternoon and some real goofiness ensued before Big C's nap. Here are the guys using the medical kit to perform some operations on me and each other. They also wound up trying to cut their hair - so I'm not sure whether they're headed for medical school or barber college. Either way I'm both a little proud and a little concerned.
DPoD March 26th - A late Easter update
On our Easter travels we found a place that was practically giving away little 'Do-It-Yourself' Easter Bunny houses. They were already constructed, you just needed to use the parts inside to decorate them. It sounded like a great idea and although we didn't get to it Easter morning we did get Big C's put together on Monday morning since we were all off school and work. Here's Big C putting the icing on, umm after sampling it : Here he is getting out the sprinkles, it required some shaking and then some more shaking and here's the finished product - ready to eat!
Monkey did his with his teachers at school on Tuesday, but was more than glad to show off his work too!

Composting Facial Tissues ~ Used Ones
This has been a discussion around our house for a little while now. I would like to reduce our additions to the local landfill even more than we already have. Currently some biggies that we do are using cloth diapers, using reusable menstrual products, buying our laundry, shampoo (ask her about her larger size bottles) and other supplies in large quatities and then decanting them into refillable containers. We also compost and recycle. I want to do more though. We still have stuff that goes in the garbage. I asked Dave (he is a scientist don't forget) about recycling used facial tissues and paper towels.
He sees my point, but thinks that this might be taking things a bit far. He is concerned about the bacteria that might be able to thrive in the composting process and then infect us later. Seeking to prove the point once and for all, I took to the web. I found another blogger who has looked in to the same thing and thinks that Dave is right, for food crops at least.
To quote from their post:
A study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases in October 2006 reports:
Many people carry Staphylococcus aureus, a potential disease-causing microbe, in their nose and now new research shows that large amounts of this organism and other bacteria are released into the air with every sneeze.
In a discussion on food poisoning, Health A to Z cautions:
It is estimated that 50% of healthy people have the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus in their nasal passages and throat, and on their skin and hair. Rubbing a runny nose, then touching food can introduce the bacteria into cooked food. Bacteria flourish at room temperature, and will rapidly grow into quantities capable of making people sick.
Could I safely throw our tissues in the compost pile and then confidently use that compost on food crops? I’ve searched online and had trouble finding any references at all to whether this is a legitimate concern.
Yesterday, I saw that John and Louisa in the UK recommend that you do not try to compost your snot due to the possibility that pathogens will survive the composting process. On Joseph Jenkins’ Humanure site, he instructs composters to allow composted toilet material to age for one year before applying it to your soil. If the compost temperature is maintained at the proper heat levels, the finished compost can be used on food crops.
So yes, I’m confident that in the right composting conditions, composting our snotty tissues would render the pathogens harmless. Unfortunately, our current situation does not allow us to set up an appropriate composting system and have the time to age it properly.
If you are still reading, here are my thoughts. We don't have a food garden, well, aside from the raspberries we don't. If I kept the compost away from food gardening, would it be okay?? I mean, if this stuff is already in my nasal passages anyhow, who cares if I get it on my hands when I am gardening, right? Hmm, we'll have to think about it.

Good Friday 2008
Good Friday falls very early this year. I think that I overheard Grandpa say that this is the earliest that it will fall for a couple hundred more years. I guess this is the earliest that I'll ever have to deal with it again!!
We all went up to Westport for our usual BBQ lunch. We discovered a fair amount of snow was there. Here the boys are helping each other to hunt for their Easter treasures. This is Big C's favourite picture from the whole day. He asks to see it again and again.
I have no idea how my son ended up getting pushed down the hill on the top of the lid to someone's cooler. Please use the comments section to help me with this one if you have more information : )
Big C got a real kick out of pushing this chair around the clearing. You can see that the sturdy aluminum frame stood up only moderately well.
More Easter treat hunting time.
Down by the creek. This word is pronounced Creak, not crick. That would be a goofy way of saying it.
