So if you're old you can get away with it?

I can just see the youth hanging around in the local coffee shops complaining "those old people sure get away with stuff that I can't.  I tell you, the old guys these days are worse than the old guys from 20 years ago".  A 76 year old guy driving to his doctor's appointment got clocked speeding 50Km/h over the limit and was going fast enough to be considered in the street racing category.  They charge him with it but it doesn't stick because he is old and was on the way to his doctor's appointment.

76 year old "Norman Harding of Pembroke, Ont., was clocked by a police officer as travelling 130 km/h while passing a vehicle in an 80 km/h zone in January. Speeds of 130 km/h or more are considered stunt driving under a new Ontario law and conviction carries a fine of $2,000 to $10,000, along with six demerit points.  However, he also said the street-racing law was not meant to be applied to seniors driving to a doctors appointment."  You can see the full article here http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2008/02/21/ot-harding-080221.html

'His friend Douglas Biggs also doesn't believe Harding should have been charged in the first place under a law designed to reduce street racing fatalities among young drivers." The police are a little out of control I'd say," said Biggs. "I have total respect for law, but they're going a little overboard."

I don't particularly care that he is old and wasn't drag racing.  Doing 50 km/h over the speed limit at any age on any road is irresponsible.  I think that they are setting a dangerous precedent in taking his age and his declared destination into consideration.  The man was driving recklessly.  What is the cut off point when you are no longer considered even capable of being suspected of stunt racing?  I mean obviously at 76 I believe that he wasn't drag racing.  If he was 25 could he have been?  What about 35?  What about 19 but with his kid in the car?  Does that buy him maturity credits?  I have known of reckless drivers covering a range of ages.  They age, they don't always become better drivers.  Racing or not, it was stupid and I am glad that his car was impounded for a week and that he had to pay a hefty fine.
